Every Part Should Have a Spot: How to Properly Organise Your Workshop

· Spare Parts

Tell me, how many times have you not been able to find something that you needed at that moment. If you're a carpenter, handyman or metal-worker, a great deal of your job probably involves searching for missing tools and parts. And this is totally understandable, there are just so many items that are hard to keep track of in a workshop. However, with the right method of organisation, you don't have to lose time and nerves looking for that right bolt. Here are some tips to help you organise your workshop efficiently.

Utilise Organizer Boxes

First of all, the biggest mistake you can make is to leave everything lying on the desk or on the floor. There are many different organizer boxers that can be used to store things neatly away so that you don't trip or hurt yourself on something. A very convenient option is a parts organizer box consisting of drawers with clear lids that will allow you to have a peek of what's inside without having to waste time opening them. You can also choose a parts organzier box that can resist oils and dirt in order to keep your workspace clean. These boxes can be placed on the floor and used as sideboards, or be mounted directly onto a wall and serve as shelves. In a heavy-duty environment such as a workshop, it's important to pick organizer boxes made of durable materials such as co-polymer.

Consider Vertical Storage

Vertical storage solutions are a great way to save and floor space and increase the freedom of movement in the workshop which in turn, can help productivity. For that reason, many workshop owners mount storage solutions on the walls. Besides storage boxes, you can also use shelves, and rails, toolboards and similar storage options. This way, you can visually look for something without taking the time to rummage around closed drawers.

Label Everything

But even if you have enough storage solutions, if you can't memorise where everything is, you will still have a hard time finding the items you need. Since there are so many nuts, bolts and tools in a workshop, it isn't humanly possible to remember where you've put something. For that reason, it's recommended to categorise your gear into separate groups, and then clearly label the drawers, boxes, shelves and other containers where they're stored.

Get Rid of Clutter

However, even when your gear is neatly stored away and labelled, the atmosphere in the workshop can still feel overwhelming. And the main reason for this is the fact that there are too many things. So, just as you would at home, it's important to clean out the clutter every once in a while. There's a high chance that the parts and tools you haven't used in the last couple of years, you won't ever use. With that being said, it's important that you get rid of everything that you don't find useful.
